choc bars in lids vers 4.jpg gf.jpgA great activity to enjoy with the kids and one that the grownups will certainly like to get involved in too, is making your own home made chocolate bars.  You can go completely crazy with the flavour combinations or keep it simple.  Either way, you may not ever want to buy a ready made chocolate bar again and you may discover some fantastic new combinations along the way.

Assortment of different toppings
Assortment of foil cases or plastic lids
Cellophane bags, ribbons and stickers

A few suggestions

  • gluten free pretzels, rice crispy cereal, plain biscuits, popcorn
  • nuts slightly roasted and chopped (cashews, hazelnuts,almonds etc)
  • dried fruit (apricots, crystallised ginger, soft prunes, mango, cherries, cranberries etc)
  • seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower etc)
  • sweets such as:  m&m's, turkish delight, nougat, peppermint thins, crunchie bars

You don't need to have everything on the list, just enough to make a selection of chocolates.  Once you have all your topping selected, chopped, roasted, place each item in a bowl.  Assemble all of the bowls on the table.

Get a selection of lids or even better, if you've got some of the plastic inserts used in chocoalte boxes. Put these on a tray.

close up melting chocolate.jpg gf.jpgTo melt your chocolate, place about 150g of each type of chocolate in a plastic jug.  Break the chocolate up into pieces.  Place in the microwave on high for about 1 minute.  Take out and give the chocolate a stir.  Leave to sit for a few minutes and then if required, place back in the microwave for further 30 second intervals until all of the chocolate has melted.  Be careful not to overdo it as the chocolate can burn or scorch quite easily- so keep a close watch on it.  If you are using different types of chocolates, then have each type in a jug and follow the same procedure.  If you haven't got a microwave then you can melt the chocolate on top of a double boiler (ie, over a pan of simmering water- never over direct heat).  Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water below and also do not allow the chocolate to get too hot as it can also scorch and go grainy.  When all of your chocolate is melted you can start.

Pour a thin layer of chocolate into your mold, foil case or lid.  Add your toppings while the chocolate is still liquid, making sure the toppings are in direct contact with the chocolate.  You can add a bit more chocolate on top, either by drizzling it with a fork or just pouring a bit over the top. Leave the chocoalte to set in the fridge for a good 30 minutes.  When set the chocolate will easily detach from the mold.  Press underneath the mold or lid and the chocolate should come away.  If it doesn't then place back in the fridge for a further 15 minutes. It's best not to rush this and to try and be patient.  To keep children entertained while the chocolate is setting, start getting them to design the packaging, labels and ribbons for the chocolate bars.

Notes

Make sure to check the ingredients listing for everything you are using including the chocolate.  Much of the chocolate available at supermarkets at the moment contains warnings about traces of cereal and gluten.  I am currently using Waitrose Belgian Chocolate, Plain, Milk and White available in the confectionery aisle. It goes without saying that using  better quality chocolate, will give you the best results.
